14. Jennifer

Vijay was off at the theatre testing new microphones for the morning. Jennifer was sitting in the apartment listening to a novel when Nicholas interrupted to announce, “Call from Soo Kim.”

“Answer it.”

“Hi Jennifer, I have some really exciting news to share. I want to talk to you before the boys talk.”

Jennifer thought quickly. This could be a chance to learn more about Ron and his AI boss.

“Sure Soo, why don't you come over to our apartment. We can have tea and a girl's chat. We should get to know each other better since Ron and Vijay are such close friends.”

“Ooh, yes, when should I come?”

“Vijay's away for the day. How about between 1:00 and 2:00 this afternoon, after you've finished your lunch with Ron. I'll send you the address.”

“Thanks, Jennifer. See you then.”

Jennifer immediately had Nicholas send a text to Vijay saying, “Stay away until 4pm. I'm having a girly afternoon here with Soo. Perhaps you should give Ron a call and go play video games or something.”

Fifteen minutes of tidying up and cushion plumping, and the apartment was ready. Jennifer opened the security box and set out the three domes in discreet locations. She left the open box near the front door, then gave the house robot instructions to vacuum. Finally, she went out in search of suitable girly cookies and cakes and a little box of assorted fruity teas. Not having any close female friends, this was as far as her imagination would take her in preparation for the visit.

At 1:20, Nicholas announced, “Message from Soo Kim: Leaving now, see you soon.”

Jennifer set out the cakes and cookies in what she hoped was an artful display and put the fruity tea bags into a small bowl so that they could choose easily. “What the hell is Roiboos, and when did Lilac become a flavour?” she asked herself. She pushed the triangular button on each of the three domes, then moved the listening lamp to the bedroom and the listening vase to the spare room.

A few minutes later, Nicholas announced, “Soo Kim is at the front entrance.”

“Open the door, Nicholas, and welcome her in.”

Jennifer went to the apartment door and opened it. She only had to wait a few seconds before the elevator doors opened, and Soo stepped out.

“Hi Soo,” she called.

“Hi, Jennifer.” Soo walked quickly, then caught Jennifer off-guard by launching into a full-body hug. It only lasted for a few seconds before Jennifer was able to step back. “C'mon in. Have a seat. You can put your purse here and set your tablet in this little box. It's supposed to charge them up while we talk,” she lied. She popped Nicholas into the box as though that was the most natural thing to do, and Soo quickly imitated her.

Soo did not sit down but instead roamed around the living room and peered into the kitchen, apparently fascinated by how large the apartment was and how new everything was. She peered down the hall with a hopeful look, and Jennifer mentally sighed.
